Abstract
Speech is one of the human behaviors related to language. In principle, the language of speech has a peculiar diction that renders the public unable to fully comprehend the meaning. The objective of this research is to analyze the figurative utterance meaning contained in Soekarno’s speech Let a New Asia and Africa be Born. The research problems that will be discussed are (1) What are the types of conceptual metaphors found in each utterances of Soekarno’s Let a New Asia and Africa be Born and (2) What meanings are produced from each figurative utterances contained in Soekarno’s Let a New Asia and Africa be Born. The theory used in this research is one of the cognitive semantic theories by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson which consist of three types, notably structural metaphor, orientational metaphor and ontological metaphor. In addition, the supporting theory used in this research is sentence relations theory by Saeed. This research employs qualitative method with library research approach. The data used in this research are twenty-five utterances from Soekarno’s speech Let a New Asia and Africa be Born. Regarding to the findings of this research, there are fourteen data included in structural metaphor, four data belongs to orientational metaphor and seven data are drop to ontological metaphor. Then, the conceptual metaphor meanings found from each data produced thirteen true meanings related to the things that can be adapted and applied by the public in an effort to rise and recover from COVID-19 pandemic.
