Abstract
Sociolinguistics studies the relationship between language and society. Everyone has a different communication style when communicating with each other. Due to many language differences, it is possible for them to mix their languages in their communication system. Mixing a language with other languages in sociolinguistics is called code mixing. The use of a code mixing in the community was a common thing. It features one of Indonesia’s most famous pop singers, Raisa Andriana. Therefore, this research used Raisa Andriana’s Twitter account that consisted code mixing for the analysis with the research questions: 1) What types of code mixing are used in Raisa Andriana’s writings on Twitter; 2) What social functions are found in Raisa Andriana’s writings with code mixing on Twitter. This research referred to the theory of code mixing from Hoffmann (1991) to answer the research questions. To refined the research topic, this research contained 50 tweets from Raisa Andriana’s personal Twitter account. This research also used a qualitative method and a content analytical approach to analyze the data. The data were collected by being identified, recorded and stored in the data table. The tweets were transferred into dataset were then analyzed, interpreted and concluded. The finding showed that six types of code mixing were found in this research: code mixings in the form of intra-sentential word, code mixing in the form of intra-sentential phrase, code mixing in the form intra-sentential clause, code mixing in the form of intra-lexical suffix, code mixing in the form of intra-lexical prefix, and code mixing in the form of change of pronunciation. In addition, six social functions of code mixing were found in this research: talking about a particular topic, expressing solidarities/empathy about something, having intention of clarifying speech, expressing group identity, having repetition, and quoting somebody else. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that most of code mixing in Raisa’s tweets were short writing types, such as words and phrases in English, that were inserted into Indonesian tweets. Majority of her tweets that contained code mixing talked about particular topic, promoted her works and expressed her feeling toward her followers and fans.
