Abstract
The researcher analyzes metaphor of nature and its meanings in Edgar Allan Poe’s poems entitled Annabel Lee, Dreamland, Valentine, For Annie, Ulalume, Spirits of The Death, The Raven, The City in The Sea and The bellsaiming to find the kinds of metaphor of nature and the meanings of each metaphor of nature. The method used in this research is the researcher to collect data as the key instrument, while this study employed qualitative method to help the researcher as the key instrument to collect data. Having collected the data, the researcher used descriptive-qualitative method to analyze the data. This method is used to analyze the kind of metaphor of nature and its meaning. After all poems are analyzed, the researcher founds out two kinds of metaphor of nature which aretypical romantic metaphor and typical symbolic metaphor, as stated by Jakobson’s theory and the meanings of each metaphor of nature as stated by Riffaterre’s theory. The researcher founds out fourty four sentences of typical romantic metaphor and thirdty three of typical symbolic metaphor in Edgar Allan Poe’s selected poem. The researcher also explained each typical in those poems to make easier for the reader when reads this research. Meanwhile about the meanings of nature element in Poe’s Poem are divided into three; they are ten words of symbol meaning, twenty four words of sense meaning and thirdty one words of value meaning. In a nutshell, the poems of Edgar Allan Poe consist of many metaphors of nature. The author shows his style in the exploitation of the used language in order that it can increase the reader’s curiosity about the content and the meaning of the poems.
