Abstract
Conflict is divided into two parts, namely social conflict and inner conflict. Inner conflict will usually be related to feelings of confusion, anxiety, and other feelings that attack them. Inner conflicts can occur in literary works, especially novels, the problem is that each novel has a different inner conflict in attracting readers. The research questions are: 1) What is the form of inner conflict described by the author through the main character in Angie Thomas's novel The Hate U Give and Nic Stone's Dear Martin? 2) What are the factors causing the inner conflict experienced by the main characters in Angie Thomas's novel The Hate U Give and Nic Stone's Dear Martin? This research uses plot theory by Norman Friedman and character construction theory by Lina Varotsi. The researcher uses a qualitative method with a comparative literary approach to describe and draw conclusions from the results of the analysis. The results of this study show that the two main characters in the two novels have similarities and differences in the form of inner conflict. The main character of the novel The Hate U Give, Starr has a tendency to inner conflict in fear, anxiety, emotional or sensitive, and confusion in making decisions. While the main character of the novel Dear Martin, Justyce has a tendency to inner conflict with fear, confusion, and insecurity. The factors that cause the inner conflict of the two novels are equally based on personal experience, lack of support and motivation, lack of place to express emotions, and negative thoughts. Suggestions in making a literary work, especially a novel, theoretically we can use the intrinsic elements of the theory of Norman Friedman and Lina Varotsi on the plot and character construction. Practically, inner conflicts in literary works can be included in plot elements and can be constructed according to the author's taste in attracting readers.
