Abstract

ENGLISH : Adaptation of literary works is a phenomenon that occasionally happens nowadays. Many literary works are re-created into an entirely new form and medium. Among the many adaptation phenomena is the transition from written literary works into films. In the transition process, of course, it will produce various variations and changes, which is one of the interesting topics to be studied. Likewise in this study which raises the issue of the adaptation process from memoir to film. The problems raised in this study are: (1) How are the intrinsic elements constructed in The pianist’s Memoir and The pianist‘s Movie ? (2) How are the adaptation process in intrinsic elements from The pianist’s memoir to The pianist’s movie ? The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The theory used is the theory of Hutcheon (2006) regarding the adaptation process in literary works. The researcher also applies the comparative literary criticism method by using the supporting theory from Mays (2016) about intrinsic elements in literary works. The results of data analysis show that eight data are included in the plot category, ten data are categorized into character classification, and the last six data are included in the setting category. Meanwhile, the results of the analysis of the adaptation process found data in the form of five additions, eight subtractions and one major modification. The things that cause the change include the personal motives and economic lure of the adaptor. INDONESIA : Adaptasi karya sastra menjadi sebuah fenomena yang banyak terjadi sekarang ini. Banyak karya-karya sastra yang di ciptakan ulang menjadi sebuah bentuk dan media yang sama sekali baru. Diantara banyaknya penomena adaptasi tersebut adalah peralihan dari karya sastra tulis menjadi film. Dalam proses peralihan tersebut tentunya akan menghasilkan berbagai variasi dan perubahan yang mana hal ini menjadi salah satu topik yang menarik untuk dijadikan bahan studi. Begitupun dalam studi ini yang mengangkat persoalan mengenai proses adaptasi dari memoir ke film. Masalah yang diangkat dalam studi ini adalah: (1) Bagaimana elemen intrinsik dikonstruksi dalam memoir dan movie The Pianist? (2) Bagaimana proses adaptasi unsur intrinsik dari memoir The Pianist ke film The Pianist? Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori dari Hutcheon (2006) mengenai proses adaptasi dalam larya sastra. Peneliti ini juga mengaplikasikan metode kritik sastra bandingan dengan menggunakan teori pendukung dari Mays (2016) tentang intrinsic elements di dalam karya sastra. Hasil analisis data menunjukan delapan data masuk kedalam kategori plot, sepuluh data dikategorikan kedalam klasifikasi tokoh, dan enam data terkahir masuk kedalam kategori setting. Sedangkan dari hasil analisis proses adaptasi ditemukan data berupa lima penambahan, delapan pengurangan dan satu modifikasi utama. Adapun hal-hal yang menjadi penyebab perubahan itu diantaranya adalah adanya personal motives dan economic lure dari pengadaptasi.
