Abstract
Language is a communication tool used by humans in everyday life. Every language has variations which are also called language styles. Movie is a visual communication in which a language style can be found and analyzed. Because of that, this study attempted to comprehensively analyze the language style and its influencing factors found in the 2021 Oscar-winning movie, Nomadland. To analyze the language style in this movie, the theory of McCrimmon was employed. Next, to determine the factors influencing the language style of the movie’s characters, Holmes’ theory was used. The movie was selected due to the distinct thinking process of various characters in the movie resulting in the production of different kinds of language styles occuring in each conversation between the characters. This was the reason why this object was linguistically worth investigating. The method used in this study was a descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained from the transcription of the characters’ conversations in the movie consisting of 100 data to be analyzed. The results showed that the data could be divided into three types of styles, namely formal style, informal style, and everyday language style. The data frequency occurrences were as follow: 12 formal style utterances, 24 informal style utterances, and 64 colloquial style utterances. The factors influencing the occurrences of language styles included function, situation, participant, and topic. Based on this study’s results, it can be concluded that the dominant language style found in the movie which is everyday language style denotes that the genre of this movie is drama due to the setting of real-life situations and the production of language style was factor-bound.
