Abstract

This research explains illocutionary acts applied by the character in Tangled’s movie. This research focuses on two problems: (1) What the types of illocutionary acts used in Tangled movie? (2) What the situational context of illocutionary acts used in Tangled movie?. This research aims to identify the types of illocutionary acts and situational context used in the Tangled movie. The theories of this research are John Searle’s on types of illocutionary acts to answer the first question and Hymes’s on situational context to answer the second question. The method of this research is qualitative method because the data analyses are not in the form of numbers and statistics. Application of the method of qualitative research means that the data generated in the form of words or sentence and in the form of quotations. The results of the research: In case of the first question, of thirty nine data of illocutionary acts in movie script, there are eight data function as representative, twenty data function as directive, six data function as commisives, four data function as expressives, and one datum functions as declaratives. Meanwhile, in case of the second questions, the situational context which influences the used of illocutionary act in the movie entitled “Tangled” are as situation of time, place, feeling and so on. The relationship between the speaker and the hearer is the most influencing factor towards the use of illocutionary act.
