Abstract
Many people classify The film of split (2016) is classified as the horror genre because it triggers adrenaline, even though if examined more deeply this film is more inclined to the thriller genre. This study aims to identify the thriller genre formula and analyze the suspension in Split (2016). This study uses a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach, 5 data which are elements of the thriller and suspense genres taken from the Split (2016) film cut and then analyzed according to the thriller and suspense formulas. The results of this study indicate that 5 thriller formulas are contained in the film Split (2016) with the following details: 1) setting, there are several professions that are actively involved in the film, namely Kevin (zoo keeper staff), Barry (Fhasionista), Dennis (criminal), Patricia (housewife ), Cool Fletcher (psychologist). 2) the storyline formula found that this story contains a plot with a fast tempo and plot twist. 3) Characteristic formula: Kevin (protagonist), Barry (protagonist), Dennis (Antagonist), Patricia (Antagonist), Hedwig (Protagonist), The Beast (Antagonist), Doctor Keren Fletcher (Protagonist), Cassey (Protagonist), Claire ( protagonist), Marcia (protagonist). 4) Tone formula: The sound in this film has an important role to build tension in the audience, influence the perception captured by the audience, and strengthen the dramatic side of the film. 5) formula style/language: dialogue is ambiguous, the dialogue delivered is an ordinary dialogue, however, the way of delivery and the circumstances in which it is delivered makes it ambiguous and tense. Suspense in Split (2016): 1) Dialogue "Did you enter the wrong car?" This dialogue is considered suspended because the questioner is in a state of alert, “What should we do?” This dialogue is called suspension because the questioner is in a corner and panicked by the situation, “he will kill us" this dialogue is considered suspended because the questioner is in a state of fear, "Don't try to run away, you will die!" This dialogue is considered suspension because it threatens the interlocutor who is being cornered, "Don't do that if you want to survive." This dialogue is considered suspension because the dialogue has an ambiguous meaning which interprets the interlocutor must obey the speaker's orders. 2) The scene of Doctor Fletcher seeing The Beast (this scene is called suspense of the evil beast apparition is a scary scene), Cassey Sees The Beast Eats Marcia (this scene is called suspense because the beast that eats Marcia is a scary scene), and Cassey is injured after being attacked by The Beast (this scene is called suspense because the protagonist's position is dying).
