Abstract

In this study, the researcher focuses on discussing the formula for the fantasy genre and the characteristics of the heroes found in the novel Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief. This study uses genre theory as the main theory. The researcher focuses this research on elements of the fantasy genre with theories from several experts such as Saricks, Gates, Howard, and several other experts. The fantasy genre is one of the genres in popular literature, with magical and supernatural phenomena as the main elements of the theme, plot, and setting. In addition, this study uses the theory of the Cawelti formula. To find the truth, the researcher has 2 questions: (1) What genre of fantasy formulas are described in Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief novel? (2) What are the characteristics of fantasy heroes in Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief Novel? The research method used in this research is descriptive method with a qualitative approach to analyze the data. The data is taken from the novel The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. The results of this study indicate that fantasy novels generally have the same formula. As according to several experts' theory, the researcher concludes that the fantasy elements contained in Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief novel are; (1) Wicked prefixes, (2) Imaginary worlds, (3) Imaginary beings, (4) Travel and quests, (5) Treasures, (6) motives for action, (7) awareness of good and evil, and (8 ) the use of magic and supernatural powers. These fantasy elements are found in the novel The Lightning Thief. Meanwhile, the characteristics of the heroes in the fantasy genre can be concluded as the mentor, the good mother, the sidekick, the villain, and the monsters. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti fokus membahas formula genre fantasi dan karakteristik pahlawan yang terdapat dalam novel Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori genre sebagai teori utama. Peneliti memfokuskan penelitian ini pada unsur genre fantasi dengan teori dari beberapa ahli seperti Saricks, Gates, Howard, dan beberapa ahli lainnya. Genre fantasi merupakan salah satu genre dalam sastra populer, dengan adanya fenomena magis dan suprnatural sebagai elemen utama tema, plot, dan setting. Selain itu, penelitian ini menggunakan teori formula Cawelti. Untuk menelitinya, peneliti mempunyai 2 pertanyaan: (1) Fantasi genre formula apa saja yang digambarkan dalam Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief novel? (2) Bagaimana karakteristik pahlawan fantasi yang terdapat dalam novel Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief Novel? Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif untuk menganalisis data. Data diambil dari novel The Lightning Thief karya Rick Riordan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa novel fantasi secara umum memiliki formula yang sama. Seperti teori menurut beberapa ahli, maka peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa unsur fantasi yang terdapat pada novel The Lightning Thief karya Rick Riordan yaitu; (1) Awalan yang jahil, (2) Dunia imajiner, (3) Makhluk imajiner, (4) Perjalanan dan pencarian, (5) Harta karun, (6) motif aksi, (7) kesadaran akan kebaikan dan kejahatan, dan (8) penggunaan sihir dan kekuatan supranatural. Unsur-unsur fantasi tersebut terdapat dalam novel The Lightning Thief. Sedangkan karakteristik tokoh pahlawan yang terdapat dalam genre fantasi dapat disimpulkan menjadi the mentor, the good mother, the sidekick, the villain, dan the monsters.
