Abstract

The adaptation in literary field is become normal as there are a lot of works that produced with helps of adaptation. One of many adaptations case that happens is the shifting process from written literary works into the films, which will produce some changes and variations on its adaptation and that is the interesting topic to be discussed. This research is focus on finding the narrative elements that are change in the adaptation process between I’m Thinking of Ending Things novel and its movie adaptation. This research has objective approach and use ekranisasi as the grand theory by Eneste (1991) to find the process of adaptation that can be separated into three section addition, modification and reduction. Three processes of adaptation later are supported by theory of plot by Mays (2018) to find the plot changes and lies another theory to support the research. Thus, the researcher stated one problem; how does the adaptation process affect the elements in the I’m Thinking of Ending Things novel into the movie? In addition, the purpose of this research is to identify and find out the narrative elements that have been changed between the novel and the movie I’m Thinking of Ending Things in the movie adaptation process. Then, the researcher looks for the elements that have been change by three processes; addition, modification and reduction. This research also based on comparative literature method by Bassnett (1993) to compare the topic. Overall, the result of this research is that there are narrative elements such plot, setting, character, points of view and symbol that changed during movie adaptation process.
