Abstract

This research is an attempt to explore certain types of figurative language in Things Fall Apart novel written by Chinua Achebe. The author posed two research questions. The first is about exploring and elaborating symbol, metaphor, simile, and personification used in the novel. The second is about finding out the most used types of figurative language in the novel. Regarding the research's objectives, the author used Literary Criticism as the means to analyze the research’s problems by referring to Objective Approach purposed by Abrams. In terms of research method, the author employed qualitative research design as the research approach since it is considered to be relevant with the research's aims and deals with words, and meaning. The analysis result confirmed that symbol, metaphor, simile and personification are employed by the author to convey meaning and heighten effect in order to assist the author’s purpose. The employment of symbol, metaphor, and simile mostly describe masculinity, agriculture, and so forth. Masculinity becomes the dominant part of the novel and is described through figurative language since it means a lot to the protagonist of the novel, Okonkwo, and motivates many of his actions. Much of his views on being masculine developed in response to his father, who preferred to socialize rather than hard work and died in debt and was unable to provide for his family, a shameful fate that was considered weak and feminine. Agriculture is also descried through the figurative language which is also related to masculinity for Okonkwo and it is great importance in the village of Umuofia. This society is still very agrarian, so, naturally, food growth is very important, and those who cannot afford it are looked down upon in society. Meanwhile, personification mostly appears in delivering folktales and stories. It also revealed metaphor as the most used types of figurative language in the novel. They were used to illustrate and describe the characters, events, and setting of place.
