Abstract

This research focuses on the social conflict which happens among the characters in The Scarlet Letter novel. This social conflict will show the problem happening in the society which is caused by the character, and it may spread to be more serious or make the new conflict. Sociology of literature, theory from Lucien Goldmann (1975) can be used to find out the social conflict as social instrument of the society is needed to understand all contexts in this research object. The method of this research is qualitative with descriptive approach, because the result of research is referring to the individual preferences. So researcher can uses its own perspective based on background experience to the research that will shows a very different results. The result of this research are the isolation and degradation which caused by a sinner, then, untruth which caused by one character in the novel. Moreover, the end of social conflict also can be finished by confession of untruth, kindness which set free the tortured, death which ended the averaged and event called unclaimed wife. Some of the events have similar factor for the ending.
