Abstract

Assertive speech act is related to what happen in the world. These speech acts carry the values of true or false. The aims of this research are: 1. To find out the types and functions of assertive illocutionary act used by Elon Musk at World Government Summit 2. To find out how the assertive acts conveyed by Elon Musk at World Government Summit. This research used descriptive qualitative approach as a research design of the study and used the main theory of Searle (1976), Searle and Vanderveken (1985), and Yule (1996). Assertive speech acts found in Elon Musk’s utterance in a forum at World Government Summit 2017 in Dubai denoted that the types of assertive speech act were asserting (10 data), assessing (11 data), concluding (4 data), and describing (3 data). The functions of assertive speech act were to assert (1 data), to claim (8 data), to inform (5 data), to remind (1 datum), to predict (7 data), to report (1 datum), to hypothesize (1 datum), and to guess (4 data). While the ways of delivering the assertive speech act were done directly (25 data) in the form of declarative used as statement and indirectly categorized as indirectness within assertive speech acts and (1 datum) and categorized as indirectness across assertive speech acts (2 data). The conclusion of this research showed that the most widely used assertive type was the asserting and assessing, that means Elon Musk’s utterances featured assertion and assessment about him and how the future will be. While the most used function is to claim, that means to establish that something is or is not the case. Furthermore, the most dominant type of the utterances was directly with declarative to make statement, that means his utterances were uttered to make a statement about something that is and will be happening.
