Abstract

Slang word is always been typical of teenager’s language. There are many new slang words created by TikTok users and become slang commonly used by the public. This research aims to explain the slang used by people in the TikTok application with the research question: What are the types and meaning of slang words found on social media TikTok in 2022? What are the functions of slang words found on social media TikTok in 2022?. This study used a descriptive quantitative approach to conduct it. The objectives of this study are to identify and describe the type and function of slang words by using some theories. The theory of Allan and Burridge (2006) used to analyze the types and the functions of slang words that are used on social media TikTok. Then, the theory that is used in analyzing the meaning of slang words is the theory of Leech (1974). It was found that there are five types of slang words on social media TikTok, they are: fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, clipping, and acronym. Meanwhile there are five of the seven functions of slang found on social media TikTok, they are: to address, to show intimacy, to initiate relax situation, to express impression, and to form intimate atmosphere. Most of the slang words found are in the type of acronym because it makes easier for social media users to communicate. Then, mostly the slang function of slang words that have been found is to form intimate atmosphere because this can make users feel intimate with each other.
