Abstract
Language deficit is a phenomenon of reduced language skills due to brain dysfunction. The symptoms can vary depending on which part of the brain is damaged. Broca’s Aphasia is brain damage that occurs in the Broca's area that can cause the patients to have difficulty in speaking and communicating. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on this topic with the following research questions: (1) what are the types of speech errors as language deficits that Sarah Scott made as a Broca’s Aphasia patient, and (2) how do speech errors as language deficits affect Sarah Scott’s oral communication in everyday life. This research used qualitative methods to gain an in-depth understanding of this topic. The main theories used were from Reason (2000) regarding speech errors and Johansson (2012) regarding changes in the communication of individuals with Aphasia. Based on the data analysis, the findings showed that Sarah made lexical errors (45 data) and morphological errors (5 data), totaling 50 data of speech errors. The lexical errors consisted of lexical selection error (28 data), addition (10 data), malapropism (3 data), substitution (2 data), and word-exchange error (2 data), while the morphological errors consisted of omission (4 data) and shift (1 datum). The data findings also showed 44 data about the effect of language deficits on Sarah's communication, namely: conversational principle (29 data), communicative context (11 data), and communicative function (4 data). Hence, it can be concluded that Sarah had speech errors as language deficits in the form of lexical errors and morphological errors, which made her experience effortful speech and limited ability in speech production. She often said the wrong word from what she intended to say. As a result of this problem, Sarah had difficulty communicating with her family and friends.
