Abstract

Vocabulary is the prior element in English that the students need to comprehend without vocabulary and cannot understand each other. The use of learning media which uses technology in the form of an android application provides the student with an easier understanding of vocabulary and also makes the learning will be fun. There are several regarding improving vocabulary by using the Duolingo application. The study is aimed to find (1) the implementation of Duolingo for learning English vocabulary, (2) the teacher’s perspective on using Duolingo for teaching English vocabulary, and (3) the students’ response to learning English vocabulary using Duolingo. This study uses a case study design of the qualitative method. This study was conducted with 30 students of eight-grade in SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Bandung. The participants were chosen by purposeful sampling. The researcher conducted an observation sheet, interview, and questionnaire to gain the data The result of the study: (1) all stages of using the Duolingo application to increase students' vocabulary can be implemented in English learning activities. (2) the teacher can understand the concept of learning media and the function of the media as a teaching aid in the classroom, specifically the use of the Duolingo application which can help teachers in learning in the classroom. (3) the majority of students are happy to use Duolingo for learning in general. More than 50% of students enjoy using Duolingo. Students can use it for various learning activities, such as learning vocabulary, improving listening skills, doing some writing tasks, improving speaking skills, and much more. In conclusion, the Duolingo application can be applied to foster vocabulary in the teaching and learning process of English. In addition, this activity recommends that teachers use the Duolingo application in the classroom. It can be a strategy for the students to improve their vocabulary skills.
