Abstract

As one aspect of language, grammar cannot be separated from learning English. Grammar has always been a thing that students fear. Not a few students show an inability to master English just because they do not master grammar well. In order to facilitate the teaching and learning process and to enhance the grammar skills of students, one aspect of education is focused on the content of the textbook. The researcher analyze the feasibility of a textbook in providing grammar material and how the textbook meets the students’ need. This study used a qualitative method, particularly a descriptive study method. The data were collected with three main instruments: a document analysis, questionnaire, and interview questions. The document of this research is the content of the English textbook entitled “Easy Grammar”. The document analysis explores the feasibility of the content of the textbook. The questionnaire was used to gain data for students’ needs analysis. Additionally, the interview is used to collect data to verify the data collected through a questionnaire, validate it, and get the depth knowledge to answer the research question. The result of the study showed that the “Easy Grammar book published by Ruang Kata fulfilled twelve out of sixteen which 75% sub-indicators in the feasibility of the content of the book. With the fulfillment of 12 sub-indicators, this book can be used for 7th grade Junior High School students. In addition, the book is arranged from basic material to advanced material that can help students which have the basic knowledge. The second point is about the students’ needs analysis. In short, this book fulfills all the aspects that students need. The books can help as complementary books in learning grammar. The findings of this research are expected to enhance students’, especially students’ motivation in studying English by engaging themselves with the appropriate textbooks that meet their needs and help the teachers carefully select the textbook as a simple content guide and can help them select the right textbook for the need of the student as a beginner student of the English foreign language.
