Abstract
The success of a work cannot be separated from its transformation from novel to film. Novels that have been successful are frequently the catalyst for the idea of adapting the story into a film or televised adaptation. The phenomenon of transforming novels to film form represents a shift in the substance of the discourse that gave rise to the term ekranisasi. This research conducted two statement of problems, there are; (1) What process of ekranisasi in characters and plot can be identified in novel and film If Beale Street Could Talk. (2) How does the ekranisasi function on the character and plot depicted in novel and film If Beale Street Could Talk. The purpose of this research is to describe and analyze the process by which the plot and characters in James Baldwin's novel If Beale Street Could Talk (1974) were transformed into the film version of Barry Jenkins' If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) the researcher analyzes the ekranisasi process that occurs in the characters and plots, and the research explains the function of the ekranisasi process that occurs in the characters and plots. This study applies Eneste's (1991) ekranisasi theory to classify the transformation categories into multiple reduction, addition, and variation of change, which is supported by Bassnett's (1993) comparative literature method. This research is a qualitative study that use the descriptive analysis method to examine and discover solutions to the problem statement that has been defined. The research analysis there are 67 reductions, 10 additions, and 24 variations of changes in the plots, and 9 reductions, 1 addition, and 1 variation of changes on the characters. Therefore, the process of reduction, addition, and variation of change may be appropriate for different film producers. The transformation process may occur due to the limited duration and other reasons to provide a valuable perspective on the adapted film.
