Abstract

The research focuses on short stories. The main topic of this research is humor. Humor has become source of human pleasure. Semiology is subject that learn human culture through sign. It relates to anything that contains sign. Semiology involves the study not only ‘signs’ in everyday speech, but of anything which ‘stands for’ something else. In a semiotic sense, signs take the form of words, images, sounds, gestures and objects. One of the most important concepts in semiotics is structuralism. This research applies Roland Barthes theory of structuralism. It tends to understand the meaning of fundamental human thought. It reveals meaning through cultural activities. Literary work has become part of human culture, it express though short stories. The most entertaining topic is humor. It has grown for centuries. It has tremendous values and an art form. The research employs theory of Salvatore Attardo to find the structure and function of humor. There are three of them which are relief, incongruity, and superiority. There are four types of function on humor topic which are social management, mediation decommitment, and defunctionalization. This topic becomes the duty for English Department student to do the research. This research used descriptive qualitative method analysis. The object of analysis is the phenomenon in the structure and function of humor in short stories collection entitled A Century of Humour. These are a short stories collected from 1830-1930 and edited by P.G. Woodehouse. The result of the research shows that humor appear in various structure and function. Though, the main purpose is to create amusement, it gives message from inside the story. Humor become the most important entertainment for people. Each structure and function lead the reader to particular understanding. This kind of doctrine is the most acceptable one. The relief structure is the simplest one and the most suitable function is social management. The incongruity structure is more complicated, it needs to find the proper intention. The suitable functions for this structure are mediation and defunctionalization. The superiority structure is the harsh one and the most suitable function is decommitment.
