Abstract

Irony is one of the figurative language that can contain humor in it. Nevertheless, there are ironic statement that lead to the serious atmosphere or not funny. This study focuses on analyzing the adaptation of the emergence of irony that contains element of humor in it (ironic humor) which appears in the film adapted by its novel with the same tittle Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.The purposes of this research are; (1) to find the types of irony that appear in novel and film Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. (2) to find the ironic humor and the adaptation process that appear in novel and film of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. This research applied the theory of irony from Petrie and Boggs (2012), techniques of humor by Salvatore Attardo (2001), and the theory of adaptation by Pamusuk Eneste (1991). In research of type of irony, the writer found 106 data of irony appeared. 69 data of irony in novel and 37 data of irony in film that adapted from its novel, those are 73 data irony of situation, 20 data of dramatic irony, 11 data of irony of character, 1 data of irony of setting, and 1 data of cosmic irony. Thus, the type of irony of situation became the most frequently used in both novel and film. In research of ironic humor that used the theory of technique of humor, the writer found 71 data of irony that became ironic humor in both novel and film. Besides, the type of irony that often became ironic humor in both novel and film is also the irony of situation. The difference between novel and film is in the use of the technique of humor. In novel, the most frequently technique of humor used is the technique of using coincidence. Whereas in film, the most frequently technique of humor used is the technique of having a humorous central narrative compilation. In research of adaptation process, the writer found 28 data of reduction, 29 data of modification and 14 data of addition. Hence, the film often used the process of the adaptation of modification or change in variation way. So, the atmosphere of comedy and the sense of humor that emerge is quite similar and hard to be separate. Thus, the film adapting the ironic humor in order to build the same sense of humor like its novel.
