Abstract

This research focuses on finding the elements of carnival and its impact in Futurama series using Mikhail Bakhtin theory of carnivalesque, the elements of the carnival was the grotesque body and bodily working, the role of feasts and food, the uses of laughter and humor, and the uses of curses and oaths. from that explanation the writer stated two problems related to the carnivalesque in Futurama; (1) How are carnival elements represented in Futurama series? and (2) How does elements of carnival impact the social authority in Futurama series? In addition, the purpose of this research is to find out the elements of carnival that is represented in Futurama series and to find out how these elements impacted the social authority within the Futurama series. Furthermore, this research used the research method of qualitative descriptive study, according to Creswell qualitative methods rely on text and image data, have unique steps in data analysis and draw on diverse designs. This method was used to analyze the data from the visual and textual standpoint because those elements can be represented through both of them. Eventually the result of this research is the representation of carnival elements and its impact against social authority within the story of Futurama animated series. The elements are presented in the form of narrative structure like plot, characters, setting etc. Those elements can have an impact against the social authority that exist within the Futurama’s world, for example the mutant race have the elements of grotesque body, their body subverted the traditional authority of the perfect human body in Futurama’s world. The writer also found out that some elements are related to each other to make an impact and another some other elements also can create two impact against social authority.
