Abstract
Simple past tense is one of many English tenses. It is to express the event or action that happened in the past time. Since tense tells about the time of the action happen, it means that tense talk about verbs. The verbs used in certain tenses change its form according to the time of happening. The verb form to create past action is by using the past form verb (V2) and it is necessary to master the verbs especially the irregular ones since the irregular verbs vary. The purpose of this research is to know how significant is the correlation between the irregular verbs mastery towards understanding simple past tense. The hypothesis of this research is Ha, means that there is significant correlation between students’ irregular verb mastery and students’ understanding of simple past tense. Ho, means that there is no significant correlation between students’ irregular verb mastery and students’ understanding of simple past tense. The method of this research was quantitative method. The data which gained is analyzed using the correlation analysis. Whereas, the technique used in collecting data was written test. By this technique, it was known the reality of both variable X (students’ irregular verbs mastery) and Y (students’ understanding of simple past tense). The result showed that the correlation of students’ irregular verbs mastery towards students understanding of simple past tenses is as follows: the average score for variable X was 73.09 and the average score for variable Y was 79.68. The correlation significance showed about 0.88 and the value of t count was 11.32 and t table was 2.086. Therefore, t count > t table which means the correlation was quite significant. Therefore, it’s concluded that students’ irregular verbs mastery will extremely influence their understanding of simple past tense. The more they have irregular verbs, the better they understand simple past tense. Therefore, it is imperative for students to master such verbs in order that they can easily create and understand the sentences or paragraphs in the form of simple past tense.
