Abstract

English song is sometimes difficult to understand as it often uses figurative language. Many people listen the English song as hobby though they do not understand the meaning. Herewith, the researcher is interested in analyzing the songs lyric of band The S.I.G.I.T in “Visible idea of perfection” album which formulated into two questions: [1] what are the kinds of figurative languages found in The S.I.G.I.T lyric in “Visible idea of perfection” Album? [2] what is the contextual meaning of each figurative language found in The S.I.G.I.T lyric in “Visible idea of perfection” Album? The researcher uses theory about figurative language from Cruse in his book “A glossary of semantics and pragmatics” (2006: 63-64), which says that figurative language is divided into seven. They are euphemism, hyperbole, irony, metaphor, metonymy, simile, and understatement. This research is most suitable using descriptive analysis and qualitative approach with the researcher as the key instrument. The data is figurative language words in songs lyric of the S.I.G.I.T which are taken from www.myspace.com/theS.I.G.I.T. The data will be categorized into seven kinds of figurative language in order to make easier to be analyzed. After categorizing data, the researcher explains the process of classifying data into kinds of figurative language and describes contextual meaning of each with giving several example of different context to make another understanding from one word. The result of this research is tables of the kind(s) of figurative language found in the S.I.G.I.T’s songs lyric and the description of contextual meaning from those figurative words. From the analysis, the researcher find that the S.I.G.I.T uses many metonymy in the songs. Finally, the researcher gives suggestion for the next research concerning the same topic or may be more specific.
