Abstract

Reading is a significant activity in language learning which is a source of information that can broaden students' reading skills. Appropriate teaching strategies make learning more meaningful for young students to improve their reading motivation for English texts. For this reason, this case study first aims to: 1) find out young learners’ motivation in reading English texts and 2) find out the teacher's strategies to build young learners’ motivation to read English texts. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study design. Questionnaires and interviews for young learners use the theory of Komiyama et al. (2013) and Wigfield, A., & Guthrie, J.T (1997). Observation and interview Malloy and Marinak (2013). The participants of this research were six students from seven grades in junior high school at SMPN 1 Cabangbungin and two teachers with criteria for teaching English. The findings show that students have intrinsic and extrinsic motivations to read English texts. Students realize that their motivation influences building their motivation. After knowing the motivation category, students can improve their reading of English texts. The teacher's strategy is to give time to read, read aloud and follow the students, give rewards, provide support, have a good relationship, and give games that can increase student motivation to read English text. The teacher offers effective strategies for building students' motivation to read English text. Thus, this research describes how intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can increase students' motivation to read English texts. Students who are already motivated to read English texts can maximize reading well and diligently. The strategies given by the teacher can increase and build students' motivation to read English texts. In addition, the results of this study can be used as a reference. Especially for young learners in junior high school and English teachers in building students' motivation to read English texts.
