Abstract

The study employs one strand of Systemic Functional Linguistics as a framework to analysis the experience in Maryam’s story. The aim of the study is to identify the transitivity processes of Maryam’s story in Surah Maryam. The study was also aimed to understand the ideational meaning of Maryam’s story that represented by the transitivity processes. Transitivity patterns represent how things happen in the world. They describe the events and states of the real and unreal world. By looking at the transitivity of Maryam’s story in Surah Maryam, it can describe how the events in the story are being constructed and what the story is about. The method used in a qualitative descriptive that shows a description or interpretation of the object of research based on theory used. The data of this study is clauses that were taken from found Surah Maryam verse 16 to 40 in The Holy Qur’an: Translation and Commentary by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. The findings of the study there are only four process types used to realize Maryam’s story in Surah Maryam. The dominant process found in the story is Material process. The second rank is Verbal process. The third rank is Relational process. The last is Mental process. Meanwhile, Behaviour and Existential processes are not used in Maryam's story. Through the transitivity processes found, there are four experiences revealed from the process types. They are the glory of Maryam, Maryam’s withdrawal, the Prophet Jesus's birth and Allah’s support of Maryam, and Maryam returns to her community. Each type of the process contributes to represent the four experiences.
