Abstract

This research deals with analyzing language from the perspective of Systemic Functional Language (SFL). It analyzes a text news from BBC text news entitled “Ahok trial: the blasphemy case testing Indonesian identity” which published in February 14th 2017. The research is then formulated into two research questions: 1) What are mood types and mood elements in BBC text news entitled “Ahok trial: The blasphemy case testing Indonesian identity”? 2) How is the realization of interpersonal meaning in BBC text news entitled “Ahok trial: The blasphemy case testing Indonesian identity”? To understand the interpersonal meaning in the text, this research analyzing the mood system of 127 clauses of the text news. Qualitative method is used in the research as the research which tends to rely on expressive elaboration and personal description towards the issue. The theory that the researcher uses to analyze the interpersonal meaning in the text is a theory of M.A.K Halliday as a reference. The result of the analysis shows the dominant typical mood of the text is declarative with 121 total clauses (95,3%) which indicates that the writer of the text news wants to inform the reader. This research also shows the dominant subject is “he” with 25 total clauses (20,2%) who refers to Ahok. Thus can be known that the text news is talking about Ahok. The finite in the text are mostly stated in Simple Present Tense with 84 total clauses (66,7%) which means that the writer of the text is telling about what is happening. Lastly, this research analyzes the polarity of the text by identify the positive and negative in each part of the clause. The most frequent polarity is positive with percentage 57,4 percent. Thus, can be seen that the writer is pros to Ahok by the positive polarity which emerged by the writer. The aim of the writer beside to give information to the reader, the writer also tells the positive sides of Ahok. Hopefully, this research can be useful for readers, especially English Department students in order to be able to understand the meaning of a text well.
