Reading is one of the skills must be mastered by students. According to Sun (2016), reading is a basic skill that allows a person to broaden their knowledge and insights. In reading, students often experience problems when comprehend the content. As stated by Sahin (2013) the type of English text can affect students' reading problems and ability. The purpose of this research is to find out what problems are experienced by students when understanding narrative text and their strategies to overcome them. The research used a qualitative research approach with descriptive design. The questionnaire and interview were used to collect the data. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of students’ problems in understanding narrative text while, interview was used to collect the data of students’ strategies to cope with those problems. The sample from questionnaire was 21 students, while the sample from interview consist of four representative students at second grade in MAS Yasipa Bandung. The result of this study exposed that all students still experience problems in comprehending narrative text. In the data obtained, the majority of the problems they encountered were problems related to vocabulary language, lack of fluency in reading, and problems caused by lack of familiarity with the subject. In overcoming the problems above, the students used three strategies to overcome their problems. The students were found to use predicting, visualizing, and questioning strategies. In conclusion, the first semester of second-grade students in MAS Yasipa still have problems in understanding narrative text, and most them used strategies to cope those problem. Therefore, this study expects future teachers or researchers to consider students' problems and strategies in presenting narrative text in class.
