Abstract

This research’s aims are to find out the kinds of personification situation, the kinds of personification object, the functions of personification, and the meaning of personification that contained in the The Noble Qur’an: English Translation of the Meanings and Commentary by Muhammad Taqiuddin Al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan. The researcher uses content analysis which focuses on analysing personification that contained in the Qur’an translation. The researcher use Melion and Ramakers’s theory for the personification, and classifies them according to Hamilton’s theory of the kinds of personification situation, Zhu’s Theory to classifies the kinds of personification object, and Tarigan’s theory to analyze the meaning of personification. This research uses the qualitative method to describe and analyze the personification sentences. The results of the finding, the researcher found 52 data that used personification that contained in 31 surats. From each data, it divided into: prosopopoeia with living creature 4 data, prosopopoeia with non-living thing 35 data, prosopopoeia with abstraction 14 data, prosopographia with living creature 1 data, and prosopographia with non-living thing 2 data. The most common kinds of personification situation found is prosopopoeia with non-living thing objects. In the meaning of personification, all of the data found are including linguistic meaning. Then from those data, they are including grammatical meaning. In the functions of personification, there are three functions used to analyze data, they are (1) to make alive images in the mind and senses, (2) to give a clear image, and (3) to create a certain atmosphere. The most widely used is to give a clear image, that is 42 data. The research implication is to give information to readers who want to increase their understanding about personification. Hopefully, this research can be the reference for other researchers about personification.
