Abstract

Considering the students’ ability in English communication is quite central in today’s life, many scholars in the world strive to develop an effective teaching strategy in teaching how to communicate in English. One of the strategies that can be used to develop speaking is the use of short movies. This research is to figure out the implementation of speaking practice using short movies. Also, to describe the students’ perception of practising speaking through a short movie in Prose and Drama Course. This research was designed as a qualitative method with a case study approach. It endeavours the students’ perception in learning speaking through short movies which are approached qualitatively. Three instruments were used in this study. The first is video observation, which seeks to examine the use of short movie as a teaching tool for oral communication in the Prose and Drama course. The observation part was contains seven statements related to the short film The Arcanum. In addition, the use of questionnaires and interview instruments, each of which contains four questions that are more focused on the emotions that result from the production of this film, was employed. That focuses on students' perceptions of speaking through a short film in Prose and Drama. The results obtained are it is proven that short films help improve students’ English speaking skills. Particularly in terms of increased self-confidence and improved pronunciation. From these data, it can be concluded that nearly all students agree that class project activities involving the production of short films with classmates can have a positive effect on students' English speaking abilities. The reason for this is that they must constantly practice, both individually and as a group. In addition, they investigate additional ways to have the correct pronunciation and a good accent.
