Abstract
Speaking is one of four important skills. Speaking is producing oral utterance to share opinion in verbal communication. Achieving fluency in oral communication is the main dream and the main motivation which a large percentage of learners bring to language classes. This study is intended (1) to know the process teaching English speaking skills in Al-Ittihad boarding school, and (2) to find out the strategies for teaching English speaking skills in Al-Ittihad boarding school. This research applied qualitative approach by using observation, and interview. The participant of this research was teacher of Muhadatsah program in Indonesian Islamic boarding school. The observation is used to know the process teaching English speaking and the document. The Interview is used to find out more details about the teachers strategies used for teaching English speaking in Al-Ittihad boarding school. According to the research findings, the result showed the following how the teaching process in Al-Ittihad boarding school and how the strategies for teaching in Al-Ittihad boarding school. The strategies that the teacher used are drilling, role play, and games as teaching strategies to teach English speaking skill and the teacher implemented the speaking procedure such as the teacher introduce the topic before start teaching, give explanation about material, use English to teach speaking skills, use Bahasa when explain the material, use media to in teaching speaking, use strategy of teaching speaking, students are encouraged to practice speaking using strategy of speaking skills to achieve communication competence, conversation is applied in cooperative and collaborative learning. In addition, the teacher used vocabularies and picture as media of teaching English speaking. To achieve communication competence, the teacher gave the task in pair. Furthermore, the result of this research based on the interview with the teacher show that the teacher used the games and role play as teacher strategy and it is effective and efficient to improve the students speaking skill. To sum up, the teacher are suggested to apply various methods and strategies and used appropriate to teach English especially in speaking skills to achieve teaching goals. For future researcher, this research can be used as an additional reference for further research in the different subject areas of teacher education.
