Abstract

Polysemy is a word with multiple meanings and will enhance the aesthetic of the text when it is employed in the sentence. Therefore, the researcher needs to undertake research on polysemy in Billie Eilish's songs for the research purposes 1. To find out the types of polysemy and 2. To find out the causes of polysemy. This research was conducted by descriptive qualitative method and used (Alwi, 1993) theory for types of polysemy and (Pateda, 2010) theory for causes of polysemy. Based on the results of the data analysis, there were 4 types of polysemy, including: polysemy verb (45 data), polysemy noun (12 data), polysemy adjective (9 data), and polysemy adverb (5 data). Meanwhile, the factors that caused polysemy in Billie Eilish’s song were: lexical factor (13 data), linguistic user factor who reduce the words usage (11 data), grammatical factor (5 data), foreign language influence factor (4 data), language component that receive the change (2 data), and rapidity in articulation of the words (0). Based on the findings of the data analysis, it can be concluded that the words of polysemy in Billie Eilish’s songs can make the listeners interpret the meaning of the words differently. Moreover, they can misinterpret the meaning of the polysemy words of the songs in general. However, other listeners can understand the meanings of the songs well and they know that the words of polysemy do not have only one meaning. Even, the use of polysemy words in the song lyrics makes them more beautiful to read.
