Abstract

The object of this research in the form of an Interview of Gabby Petito's story shows how the speakers in it can still show politeness even in situations that allow them to forget to use politeness. This study aims to explain the use of politeness principle types, pragmatic scale in politeness utterance, and the influence of gender on the use of politeness principles in Interview of Gabby Petito's Story. This study uses qualitative method with descriptive approach. The theory used is the theory of Leech (1983) regarding the principle of politeness and pragmatic scale, and the theory of gender and politeness by Holmes (1995). In the results of the analysis, the researchers found 46 data in the form of men and women utterances that adhere to the politeness principle. In the 46 data, all types of politeness principles were found which include; tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. In measuring politeness utterance using pragmatic scales, the researcher found 43 data that comply with all pragmatic scales which include; cost-benefit scales, optionality scales, indirectness scales, power/authority scales, and social distance scales. On the principle of politeness and pragmatic scale, men's utterances tend to use the approbation maxim and reach cost-benefit scales. Whereas in women's utterances, women tend to use agreement maxim and cost-benefit scales. From all the data, it is men's utterances that most adhere to the principle of politeness and pragmatic scale, thus, this study proves that gender does not always affect the use of the principle of politeness. Objek dari penelitian ini yang berupa Interview of Gabby Petito’s story, memperlihatkan bagaimana para penutur di dalamnya dapat tetap menunjukkan kesantunan walaupun di situasi yang memungkinkan mereka melupakan menggunakan kesantunan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan penggunaan tipe prinsip kesantunan, skala pragmatic dalam tuturan kesantunan dan pengaruh gender pada penggunaan prinsip kesantunan dalam Interview of Gabby Petito’s Story. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori Leech (1983) mengenai prinsip kesantunan dan skala pragmatik, dan teori gender dan kesantunan oleh Holmes (1995). Pada hasil analisis, peneliti menemukan 46 data yang berupa tuturan pria dan wanita yang mematuhi politeness principle. Pada 46 data tersebut, ditemukan semua tipe prinsip kesantunan yang meliputi; tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, dan sympathy maxim. Dalam mengukur tuturan kesantunan menggunakan pragmatic scales, peneliti menemukan 43 data yang mematuhi seluruh skala pragmatic yang meliputi; cost-benefit scales, optionality scales, indirectness scale, power/authority scale, dan social distance scale. Pada prinsip kesantunan dan skala pragmatik, tuturan pria cenderung menggunakan approbation maxim dan mencapai cost-benefit scales. Sedangkan pada tuturan wanita, wanita cenderung menggunakan agreement maxim dan cost-benefit scales. Dari keseluruhan data, tuturan pria lah yang paling banyak mematuhi prinsip kesantunan dan skala pragmatic, dengan demikian, penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa gender tidak selalu mempengaruhi penggunaan prinsip kesantunan. Bahwa bukan hanya wanita yang selalu bertutur santun tetapi pria pun sama halnya dapat bertutur santun dengan baik.
