Abstract

This study aimed to answer two research questions: What are the teachers' challenges in managing an EFL large class size, and what are the teachers' coping strategies in managing an EFL large class size. This study used qualitative data, specifically a case study with two English teachers at Maslakul Huda Islamic Elementary School as participants. To get the data, the writer used observation and interviews as data collection techniques. The results of the study showed that: (1) there are five difficulties faced by teachers, namely: teachers find it difficult to control students in before and during the learning process, students became too active in class, students tended to be passive and less interested in participating teaching and learning activities, lack of understanding and mastery of vocabulary from students, and each students has different level understanding abilities. (2) there are five strategies used by the teacher, namely: preparing lesson plan and teaching strategies before the learning process, making students disciplined in class by setting rules and giving punishment, encourage students to participate more actively durig learning process in class by utilizing media and games, being more interactive by maintaining communication between teachers and students, and creating discussion groups for students.
