Abstract

Audiobooks have many benefits. It can improve students' fluency, scale-up vocabulary, activate background knowledge, evolve comprehension, and increase motivation to interact more with books (Wolfson, G., 2008). Vocabulary is essential for the students to support their four language skills; listening, reading, speaking, and writing (David, 1991:9). It means that if the students master vocabulary, it will make them easier to learn English. Hence, this study investigate about the effect of audiobook in students vocabulary mastery for 11th grade in Sukabumi. This research was aimed (1) to find out the students’ vocabulary mastery before learning English using audiobooks. (2) to find out the students’ vocabulary mastery after learning English using audiobooks. (3) to find out the difference between students’ vocabulary mastery before and after learning English using audiobooks. This study use pre-experimental method. The population of this research is students at 11th grade at one of senior high school in Sukabumi. The data were collected by using pre-test and post-test from 15 students as an experimental group class. The result show that the mean score of pre-test increased from 60.53 to 69.33, and the tcount is 3.6 and the ttable is 2.1 which mean Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. It can be interprete that there is significant improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery. Moreover, the result of index gain is 0.22 which is in the low category. Although there is a significant improvement, the significance is low based on the result of index gain. According to the findings the audiobooks can improve students vocabulary mastery but the improvement is not high because some of possibilities in the classroom.
