Abstract

Speaking is one of the most essential language skills for effective communication that students must develop. However, still there are many students that have problems in speaking English. This research aims to know whether there is any effect of using direct method to improve EFL students’ speaking skill. This research uses a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design that consisted of one group pre-test and post-test design class. The research site of this research is at SMP Al-Amanah school, Bandung, West java. The population of this research was the eighth-grade students of SMP Al-Amanah Bandung. While the sample of this research were 26 students of class 8A. This research used three different tests to analyze the data. Those tests were the normality test, hypothesis test, and N-gain. The result of this research shows that there were significant improvements in EFL students speaking skill after receiving treatments being taught using direct method. After evaluating the collected data, it was determined from the pre-test score that the mean score of EFL students' speaking skill before being taught using the direct technique was 55.5.While, The mean score on the posttest after being taught through the direct technique was 82.5. It indicates that the direct method significantly improves the speaking skill of EFL students’.
