Abstract
Listening is one of important aspect in learning a foreign language. Listening plays an important role in the language learning. Actually there are several techniques in teaching listening. Cloze dictation is one of several technique in teaching listening in the classroom. The purposes of this research are to find out the students’ ability in listening before using cloze dictation technique, to find out the students’ ability in listening after using cloze dictation technique, and to find out the significant influence of cloze dictation technique in teaching listening. The method used in this research is quantitative method with a quasi-experimental. The population of this research was second grade students of Junior High School that consists of 20 students. The researcher used one class for cloze dictation treatments. The results were compared before and after the treatments were held. The reason is the researcher only focus the students scores. To obtain the data, the researcher uses test (pre-test and post-test) and observation. The data analysis was used to count the effectiveness of cloze dictation as a technique to improve the students listening skills. The statistical result shows that, by significance 5% tcount = 3,7 while ttabel = 2,71. It means that tcount was higher than ttable. Therefore, working hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. In conclusion, there is a significant influence of cloze dictation technique to improving students’ listening skills. Thus, this method is recommended in teaching listening for second grade students.
