Abstract

Semantics as the study of meaning stands at the very center of the linguistics quest to understand the nature of language and human language abilities. Lexical meaning is the fixed meaning. This meaning is often referred to as meaning in accordance with the dictionary, for instance “long” measuring a great distance from end to end. Contextual meaning is the contextual meaning is the terms explained the actual meaning according to the situation in which they were, for instance “is the night feels long to leave and noon came.” This research discusses lexical meaning and contextual meaning in Westlife Lyrics Songs. The writer takes one album. In addition, there are two research questions in this research to discuss: 1) what are the lexical meaning in the lyrics of Westlife songs? 2) What are the contextual meaning in the lyrics of Westlife songs? There are thirteen songs from one album. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method because the writer would analyzes and interpret the research object of Westlife Songs Lyrics. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method because the writer would analysis and interprets the research object of Westlife Songs Lyrics. The step to obtain the data is by collecting sources of the data from Westlife Songs Lyrics; select the songs which contain semantics, listen to the lyrics of songs to understand the contents of songs that will be analyzed the collected data and makes conclusions. The result of this research is showed that; the lexical meaning in this research is the same as that of the meaning in the dictionary meaning, the contextual meaning in this research was adapted from the context in stanza of the lyrics itself.
