Abstract

This study investigates how Forrest Gump's disability is portrayed in romantic relationships. To investigate how the main character, Forrest Gump, and his partner, Jenny, experience difficulties in having a love relationship because of Forrest's disability, the researcher uses qualitative techniques with narrative analytic methods. The study seeks to investigate how the film overcomes disability difficulties while presenting an ideal romance formula. This study also finds that Forrest Gump's movie adheres to Janice Radway's ideal romance formula while adapting it to a disability setting. And the next supporting theory is conflict theory from Myers which consists of internal conflict and external conflict. The results of the analysis show that the romance formula points based on Radway's theory in this film there are 10 points found. The film also shows that Forrest is a loving, kind and sympathetic individual who is able to develop lasting relationships despite his flaws. Jenny's reaction to Forrest's disability is honestly portrayed in the film. This disability also made Forrest have to face various obstacles in his life personally, such as getting bullied, having difficulty getting love and also being ostracized from the wider community. Forrest and Jenny as a couple also face a lot of conflicts consisting of internal and external conflicts.
