Abstract

This research analyzes the social conflict the novel caused and the consequence of conflicts during the story. The purposes of this research are; (1) to find the cause of conflict in both F.Scott's The Great Gatsby and Hamka's Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck, (2) to find the consequence of social conflict for the characters in both F.Scott's The Great Gatsby and Hamka's Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck. The researcher uses the theory of Susan Basnett as the theory from comparative literature and Lewis Coser's theory as the Conflict theory. The theory by Edward H Jones to answer the research question is the cause and consequence. The result of this research based on the theory by Edward H Jones are find the cause of social conflict in both novel; relationship, missunderstanding and differences in life background. Also find the consequence of social conflict for the characters. The last result of the comparative study based on Susan Bassnet theory, which finds three similarities in both novels; the Romantic novel, the character structure, and the story's ending.
