Abstract

This research aims to identify the ideal romance formula in the movie scripts of Emma (2020) and Persuasion (2022) then determine the differences. The researcher applies the ideal romance formula theory by Radway to analyze the formula of both movie scripts which then supported by the theory of comparative literature to compare the two formulas. This research uses a qualitative method, because the data analyzed are words taken from the movie scripts. The data collection technique used is documentation study because the movie script is the source of data. The researcher used the technique of analyzing data based on the theory of Radway's ideal romance formula which was then compared with the theory of comparative literature. The results found are that both movie scripts fulfill 10 functions out of 13 functions in the ideal romance formula by Radway. Emma (2020) fulfills the first, second, third, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth functions. Meanwhile, Persuasion (2022) fulfills the first, second, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth functions. It can be concluded that both movie scripts fulfill the majority of functions in the ideal romance formula by Radway. There are differences in the causes of the fulfillment of both functions despite the equal number of fulfilled functions. This is due to the fact that Emma (2020) has a best friend to love romance theme. While Persuasion (2022) has the romance theme of falling in love to the same person for the second time.
