Abstract

Speaking skill is one of the important part English skills that usually used to communicate but still many problems that often arises on students that is still many students have difficulty to speak English for various reasons. One of the reasons is because the learning technique and media that teachers used are still relatively traditional. Nowadays, there are many students that are interested in using technology, especially using social media. TikTok is one of the social media that many people use in this 21st century. TikTok provides a video platform that can be used for learning teaching media especially for learning teaching speaking. According to Hakim (2016), using video is highly recommended as media teaching learning speaking. Therefore, this research aims (1) to examine the students’ speaking skill before learning by using TikTok application, (2) to examine the students’ speaking skill after learning by using TikTok application, and (3) to find out the significant different between before and after using TikTok application in learning speaking skill. This research used a quantitative approach and pre-experimental method with using only one group of pretest and posttest. The research applied purposive sampling from eighth-grade students of SMPIT Qordova Rancaekek Bandung that consisted of 25 students as the sample of the research. The students were given a pretest to measure the basics of the students’ speaking skill and a posttest was given to find out the improvement of the students’ speaking skill after being given three times of treatment in learning speaking skill using TikTok application. To analyze the statistical data, the researcher used SPSS version 26 to compute the t-test. The result of this research shows that there was a significant improvement in the students’ speaking skill after using the TikTok application as a medium of teaching learning speaking. The result showed that the mean score in pretest was 10.79 that was categorized low whereas the mean score in posttest was 14.12 that was categorized medium. Furthermore, the t-test score which was 10.149 was higher than t-table which was 2.064. It meant that the TikTok application could improve the students’ speaking skill. In conclusion, the TikTok application can be used as teaching learning media in improving the students’ speaking skill. The research suggests the English teacher uses the TikTok application as teaching media to improve the student’s speaking skill.
