Abstract

Listening is one of the very essential components for EFL learners. However, some students are still struggling in understanding the point. Therefore, analyzing the students’ difficulties becomes the reference for coping with their struggles. This study is aimed to know the difficulties of students’ listening and how to overcome it. This study uses a descriptive analysis design of the qualitative method. A descriptive study was implemented because this study wants to understand a phenomenon which is students’ responses toward the difficulties in listening. This study was conducted with 9 students of the English Education Department at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. To gain the data, the researcher conducted a questionnaire and interview. The study found that students’ difficulties in English listening are categorized into four categories such as the content of the listening text, the linguistics feature, the listeners, and the speakers. However, to deal with the difficulties, the researcher found some effective ways, which are cognitive strategies, socio-affective, memory, and cognitive strategies. In conclusion, students found the difficulties in learning listening, but they can still deal with the strategies given. Moreover, this activity is recommended for teachers to be implemented in listening classes.
