Abstract

The raising popularity of social network technology brings a great influence to everybody’s live in various aspects including learning and teaching English writing. Students lately have known as an active social network user even with English as daily communication. Since writing is still considered as the most difficult skill, this study mainly examines the correlation between student’s online activity in writing English expression through social network site and their writing achievement. This paper is aimed to investigate the students’ online activity in writing English expression through social network sites, to seek out the students’ writing achievement, to seek out the correlation between student’s online activity in writing expression using English through social network sites and their writing achievement. A quantitative study was carried out using the statistical correlation method. The questionnaire and document analysis as the instruments in which questionnaire is used to know student’s online activity in writing English expression through social network sites (X variable) and students’ writing achievement (Y variable) is gained based on their writing III score. The research subject consists of 30 participants from class C randomly selected among the sixth semester student of English Education Department. The findings proved that the student’s online activity writing English expression through social network site is identified in average level. It is based on the result with mean of variable X is 2.8. Whereas, the result of previous data from the students’ writing achievement is known that the mean of variable Y is 73.03 which is considered good level. The study found that the correlations between student’s online activity in writing English expression through social network site and their writing achievement were 0.411. Based on significance degree of 5%, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) will be accepted if tcount is greater than ttable. The statistic calculation proves that tcount = 2.6079 while ttable = 2.048, so the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means that there is significant correlation between student’s online activity in writing English expression through social network and their writing achievement. The study concludes that there was an enough correlation between the student’s online activity in writing English expression through social network site and their writing achievement. The findings of this study are expected to utility the social network sites as an effective, innovative and creative media in teaching English Writing.
