Abstract

It is undeniable, one of the roles of literature in human life is as a medium of entertainment. However, a good type of literary work is one that can both entertain and educate its audience at the same time. This study attempts to analyze these two elements in the film Kingdom of Heaven (2005) by Ridley Scott using qualitative method and the theory of dulce et utile proposed by Horace in Ars Poetica along with literary pragmatic approach that requires researchers to play two roles at once, as a researcher as well as an audience. The types of Dulce that are examined in this film are in the form of plot stages and how the mood shown in each stage produces a cathartic effect for the audience at the end. Meanwhile, the type of Utile studied in this film is in the form of moral values based on Hartmann's theory so that the audience can take lessons from what they have watched.
