Abstract

Politeness strategies are strategies used in conversation for maintaining the face of interlocutor. On the other hand, politeness strategy is an act to prevent or to avoid disfiguration of hearer’s face from FTA by speaker. Thus, it will give comfortable communication and it also will not make some conflict. The researcher perceives interested to politeness strategies and considering to research this topic with research formulas: 1. What kinds of politeness strategies are used by Stephen Colbert and Keanu Reeves in The Late Show with Stephen Colbert? 2. How do Stephen Colbert and Keanu Reeves apply politeness strategies in The Late Show with Stephen Colbert? This research employed descriptive qualitative method and the primary theory employed in this research was politeness strategy from Brown and Levinson (1987). The result of this research showed that kinds of politeness strategies in this talk show were 70 data. Those data consisted of 48 data of positive politeness strategies as the most applied strategy by Stephen Colbert and Keanu Reeves. Followed by 14 data of negative politeness strategies applied by Stephen Colbert. Then, 6 data of off record strategies applied by Stephen Colbert and Keanu Reeves. Lastly, 2 data of bald on record strategies applied by Stephen Colbert. Based on findings, it can be concluded that positive politeness strategy was mostly used by Stephen Colbert and Keanu Reeves. They mostly applied seeking agreement strategy in order to lessen the thread upon the hearer face. The use of positive politeness showed the friendliness, closeness, and cooperation between Stephen and Keanu.
