Abstract

As a social beings, humans need communication to socialize with each other. In communication, deixis is a crucial factor that needs to be considered to avoid miscommunication and build effectiveness in communication. Therefore, this research deals with the topic of discourse deixis with the objectives: 1.To find out the types of discourse deixis in Suho EXO's speech at Stanford Korea Program 20th Anniversary Conference and 2. To investigate the functions of discourse deixis in Suho EXO's speech at Stanford Korea Program 20th Anniversary Conference. This research employed qualitative method and theory of Deixis by Levinson (1983). The result of analysis found but (4 data), or (1 datum), actually (1 datum), so (2 data), this (10 data), that (2 data), those (1 datum), these (4 data), there (1 datum), it (20 data), and (7 data) as the types of discourse deixis. Moreover, there were deictic expression that contained anaphora function, such as and, it, this,. Meanwhile, deictic expression that contained cataphora function, such as that, but, or, so, these, those, and actually. Therefore, it is concluded that discourse deixis in Suho EXO's speech was mainly to indicate a relationship with the preceding context with the function to refer the forementioned thing for effective communication.
