Abstract

Writing is one of the most challenging language skills for students to master (Alwasilah, 2004). This research was to increase students' descriptive writing skills by applying interactive writing techniques. The research investigates whether implementing an interactive writing technique improved students' ability to write descriptive texts in seventh-grade SMP Al Amanah Cileunyi, Bandung. This research employed a quantitative method using statistical models as the data analysis methodology. A pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design were utilized to collect data. The seventh-grade students were chosen as the sample. There were 23 students in the sample class for this study. Pre- and post-tests were administered to collect data on students' writing skills. Both the pre-test and post-test were essay-based. The pre-test was administered to measure the student's performance before the implementation of the treatment, and the post-test was administered to evaluate the student's concert following the implementation of the treatment. The finding showed that the mean score of the pre-test was 61.47 while the mean score of the post-test was 80.39. It signified that students' writing skills on descriptive text improved after interactive writing as the teaching technique treated to the students, referred to the score for n=23 with the degree of freedom n-1 and the significance level 0.05. The result of the hypothesis test, the score of t-count was 8.895 while the score of t-table was 1.714, declared that 8.895 > 1.714, and the score of sig (2-tailed) 0.000 < 0.05, which shows that H0 of this research was rejected. Ha was accepted, indicating significant differences in students' writing scores before and after implementing the interactive writing technique. Finally, it was demonstrated that the interactive writing technique improved students' descriptive text writing skills at SMP Al Amanah Cileunyi, Bandung. It is suggested that English teachers use interactive writing techniques when teaching students on how to write descriptive texts.
