Abstract
Humor, including stand-up comedy, relies on language to entertain the audience. Comedians often employ conversational implicature to create humor in more subtle ways. This research explores the phenomenon of conversational implicature in Anthony Jeselnik’s stand-up comedy show on Netflix titled “Fire in The Maternity Ward”. Employing the theory by Grice (1975), this research aims to analyze both generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature, as well as the flouting of maxims utilizing the descriptive qualitative method. This study focuses on two problem formulations, namely: (1) Conversational implicature used by Anthony Jeselnik in the stand-up comedy show, and (2) What maxims are flouted in the stand-up comedy show. The research findings show a total of 32 occurrences of generalized conversational implicatures and 86 occurrences of particularized conversational implicatures. The particularized conversational implicatures are categorized into different types of maxims flouted and flouting strategies, including 39 instances of flouting quality maxims consisting of 9 hyperboles, 14 ironies, 2 metaphors, 2 banters, and 12 sarcasms. The second is the flouting maxims manner, with 28 occurrences comprising 19 occurrences of vagueness, 7 occurrences of ambiguousness, and 2 occurrences of incomplete utterances. The third is the flouting of relevance maxims comprising 9 occurrences of giving hints and 9 occurrences of presupposing which is 18 in total. Lastly, the flouting of the quantity maxim occurs only one overstating. Meanwhile, the flouting strategies that are not employed were meiosis, understatement, tautology, association clue, over-generalize, and displacing hearer. Contrasting with vagueness and ironies as the most used strategy.
