Abstract
This study aims to determine the difficulties faced and the teacher’s strategies used when teaching English vocabulary to students with special needs, with a special focus on students with intellectual disabilities. This study employs a case study method as a qualitative research design. This study followed the procedures of Creswell's (2014) qualitative data analysis. 2 participants from one of the special schools in Bandung participated. Interviews and observation were used to obtain data on exploring teachers’ strategies in teaching English vocabulary to intellectual disability (ID) students. As a result of this finding, the researcher found that the teachers face difficulties choosing suitable teaching materials and finding suitable media, and teachers sometimes mispronounce words. In addition, students face difficulties in pronunciation, writing, remembering, and speaking confidently. Thus, teachers can overcome these difficulties by using some strategies: demonstrating flashcards, worksheets, practice activities, using gestures, rewarding students, connecting previous material, using YouTube videos, repeating words, articulating vocabulary, writing material in student books, inviting students to play games while remembering, lowering the difficulty level of the material, using English videos and songs for examples of pronunciation. Thus, this study concludes that the difficulties and strategies above answer the two questions of this research. However, these difficulties and strategies may differ for each teacher who teaches English vocabulary to intellectual disability students, depending on the classification level of the students. However, in this research, the researcher did not classify the level of the students.
