Abstract

This research investigates the improvement of students’ writing skills on explanatory texts using modified FRESH technique. Several problems were found in learning writing, such as students perceive numerous difficulties, such as elaborating their ideas into a clear paragraph and having blank minds in writing. Moreover, the writer proposes a technique to solve writing problems by using Fact, Reason, Elaboration, Shift (FRESH) technique. This research aims to determine the students’ writing skills before using modified FRESH technique through explanatory texts, to determine the students’ writing skills after using modified FRESH technique through explanatory texts, and to acquire there is a significant difference after being taught using modified FRESH technique. This research applied quantitative method with pre-experimental design that consists of one group pre-test and post-test. The research site of this research was SMAN 26 Bandung. The population was 11th grade of SMAN 26 Bandung in the 2022/2023 academic year. The writer used random sampling technique with 34 students of class XI MIPA 5 as sample. The data was collected by pre-test and post-test using written tests. The data shows that the mean score of students’ writing skills before using modified FRESH technique was 54.62. In comparison, the post-test score after applying modified FRESH technique was 77.71. It means there is significant improvement by using modified FRESH technique and the scores increased by 23.09. Additionally, the result of T-test was tcount 11.66 > ttable 1.65. It indicates Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Moreover, the average N-gain was 0.48, which means in the average category. To conclude, there is significant difference of students’ writing skills on explanatory text using modified FRESH technique. Learning explanatory text using modified FRESH technique was beneficial and support students in solving their writing problems.
